The Fighting Colonels football team fell 50-34 versus Harrisburg High School on September 25.
MMA found itself down quickly, losing 2 onside kicks to the Bulldogs. Quarterback Sean Fitzgerald ’17 went 24 yards on the ground on the Colonels’ first possession, while Cody Allen ’16 went 22 yards on the next play for the MMA’s first score.
The Bulldogs answered with two long touchdown runs of their own to put the score at 28-6. The Colonels closed the gap 28-12 at the end of the half with Fitzgerald’s 26-yard pass to senior Trae Van Tasell.
The teams traded possessions in the second half, with Luis Merino Cantu ‘18 contributing a strip and fumble recovery to put the Colonels at Harrisburg’s 45 yard line. Fitzgerald capped off the scoring drive with an 18-yard run and threw a two-point conversion to junior Max Murati.
After two long drives by Harrisburg, the Colonels were down 42-20. Fitzgerald led as cadets bounced back, rushing for a touchdown and throwing a 40-yard pass to Allen with a two-point conversion by Styles Fountain ’19.
With the Colonels unable to score, the Bulldogs ran out the clock and proved victorious. The MMA offense was led by Fitzgerald, who went 12-25 for 227 yards, two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions. He rushed 18 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns and added a 59-yard interception return on defense.
Allen led the receivers with 8 receptions for 158 yards and a touchdown. Notable defenders were Murati and sophomore Jose Elizondo Villarreal, who contributed two tackles for loss each.
