A portion of the modern Hippocratic Oath describes a physician’s duty as follows: “In every house where I come, I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing … I will remember that there is an art to medicine as well as science and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.” Dr. Peter Eckern always managed to stand above the aspersions that exist in this world. He had entered many a “home” in our community, bringing nothing but his wise counsel and tender heart. His ability to brighten a gloomy place or diffuse a volatile argument was only matched by his humble method of interjecting common sense into complex situations. In brief, Dr. Peter Eckern understood what it means to be a husband, a father, a mentor, and a friend. He shared these lessons with many in our community where he will always be respected as a fine physician and a worthy farmer. On June 28, 2012, Dr. Eckern left this temporal life to spend eternity with the Lord, and he has charged all who remain to continue his mission of brotherly love and devotion.
